Radyr Comprehensive School

Overview

Leaders prioritise improving teaching and pupil well-being, resulting in a community where most pupils "feel safe and valued" and engage effectively in lessons. The school has implemented a clear vision for the Curriculum for Wales, with professional learning significantly enhancing teaching quality, particularly through improved questioning. While the curriculum is generally broad and balanced, it narrows in Year 9, and evaluation of learning progress lacks sufficient rigour in some areas.

Strengths

• Professional learning has had a "positive impact" on teaching quality, notably improving the quality of questioning in lessons.
• Staff foster positive relationships that help pupils "feel safe and ready to learn," with strong teaching supporting good progress.
• Pupils demonstrate a strength in their "ability to read and understand a broad range of complex texts."
• A positive safeguarding culture exists where staff understand their roles and most pupils feel free from bullying.
• Pupils embrace leadership opportunities and help create a culture where most feel "included as part of the whole school community."

Areas to improve

• Refine self-evaluation activities to focus precisely on pupils’ learning and skills, including those with additional learning needs.
• Ensure pupils have access to the full range of learning experiences until the end of Year 9.

Safeguarding

Leaders have established a positive safeguarding culture where staff understand their roles and most pupils know where to turn to when they require support.
