Recreation Road Infant School

Overview

Recreation Road Infant School is described as an "inclusive and caring school" where pupils are happy, feel safe, and attend well. The inspection found that pupils achieve well across the curriculum, with staff demonstrating "strong subject knowledge" and providing effective support, particularly for reading and pupils with special educational needs.

Strengths

• Pupils are "happy and feel safe," with bullying happening rarely and adults intervening quickly to stop poor behaviour.
• The school "prioritises reading," with expert staff delivering engaging phonics lessons and effective interventions helping pupils catch up.
• Provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is a strength, with accurate early identification and "effective and appropriate support."
• Staff receive "helpful training" and feel well supported, while governors provide "appropriate challenge and support for school leaders."
• The early years curriculum supports diverse needs, creating a "calm and engaging" environment where many children are ready for Year 1.

Areas to improve

• In some subjects, the school has not identified "what key knowledge it wants pupils to learn and when," hindering pupils from building a deep body of knowledge.
• The school should ensure it "finalises its curriculum thinking" so it is clear what pupils should learn and when this knowledge should be taught.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
