Strengths

• Pupils develop a love of reading early, with staff trained as experts in phonics who rigorously check progress and support those needing extra help.
• Mathematics teaching is effective, with clear explanations and ample opportunities for pupils to practise building knowledge and skills.
• Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities access the same curriculum as their peers and receive tailored support based on staff knowledge of their needs.
• The personal, social and health education curriculum covers diverse topics, helping pupils understand respect, democracy, and civil rights.
• Governors keep a close eye on staff workload, and the vast majority of staff feel proud and supported in their roles.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure all subject plans, particularly in foundation subjects, are equally ambitious and implemented effectively so pupils can successfully build knowledge over time.
• Systems for checking pupils’ understanding in foundation subjects and science are not consistently effective, meaning gaps in knowledge are not always identified or addressed quickly enough.

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff receiving detailed training and understanding their responsibilities well, while leaders act in a timely way to support pupils and families.
