Roddensvale Special School

Overview

Roddensvale School continues to demonstrate "capacity for sustained improvement in the interest of all the learners." The inspection highlights effective self-evaluation and development planning, particularly regarding individual pupil needs and emotional wellbeing, despite limited accommodation due to increased enrolment.

Strengths

• The school effectively uses "visual schedules, behaviour recording files, pupil profiles and individual education plans" to understand and support complex pupil needs.
• Staff and parents have been trained in "a range of communication programmes and aids," supporting a multi-modal approach to communication.
• An emotional health and wellbeing policy, guided by a wellbeing committee, effectively supports pupils through "complementary therapies" including play, music, and hydrotherapy.
• The use of "social stories is leading to a decrease in anxiety related behaviours for the pupils."
• Parental surveys are "highly positive about the school’s family support worker," who aids communication and signposting to additional services.

Areas to improve

• The report notes that "accommodation for individual and group work is limited" due to increased enrolment and more complex pupil needs.
• The school is continuing to "develop further the tracking systems to enable ongoing analysis of pupil progression."

Safeguarding

The school provided evidence that arrangements for safeguarding "continue to reflect the guidance issued by the relevant Departments."
