Sanquhar Primary School

Overview

Education Scotland inspectors visited Sanquhar Primary School in April 2024 and identified significant weaknesses in leadership and teaching quality. While the school demonstrates strengths in pupil behaviour and community engagement, the report concludes that the school requires additional support and time to make necessary improvements. A further inspection will take place within one year to monitor progress.

Strengths

• Children are described as "polite, articulate and keen to learn," sharing "warm and respectful relationships" with peers and staff within an "inclusive ethos."
• Pupils in P5-7 make "effective use of digital technology to support their learning across the curriculum."
• Staff work well in partnership with the local community, enhancing learning through engagement with "local history and culture."

Areas to improve

• The headteacher must prioritise improvement based on "robust self-evaluation" and establish "clear action plans with manageable, achievable targets."
• Leaders need to develop "more rigorous approaches to monitoring the quality of learning, teaching and assessment" to ensure consistently high quality.
• Staff should improve curriculum planning to ensure all children receive "depth, breadth and progression in their learning," including those requiring additional support.

Safeguarding

The report evaluates "Ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion" as "satisfactory," noting an inclusive ethos and warm relationships, though it does not provide specific details on safeguarding procedures.
