Selston Church of England Infant and Nursery School

Overview

Pupils “flourish in the safe, nurturing environment” of this aspirational school, where staff have their “best interests at heart.” The report highlights a “broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum” that prepares children well for the next stage of their education, with parents being “overwhelmingly positive” about the provision.

Strengths

• Staff deliver a curriculum with “clear progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary” from nursery through to Year 2.
• Children are “immersed in a world of books,” with staff teaching phonics well and providing immediate support for those falling behind.
• Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) “access the same learning as their peers and achieve well.”
• The school fosters strong relationships, with pupils playing happily together and treating each other with “kindness and respect.”
• Attendance has improved significantly due to effective early intervention and clear communication with parents about the impact of absence.

Areas to improve

• Staff do not always use progress information effectively, meaning they “do not move children... on to new learning when they are ready.”
• The school must ensure all learning is “well matched to pupils’ age and stage of development” so pupils can progress through the ambitious curriculum as well as they could.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
