Somerville Nursery School

Overview

Somerville Nursery School has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection. Children are described as happy and confident, benefiting from a supportive environment that prepares them well for primary school. The school continues to provide high-quality education with strong staff support and effective governance.

Strengths

• Children are happy, feel good about themselves, and are well supported to settle, make friends, and share worries.
• Staff guide children gently in behaviour, teaching them to cooperate, respect others, and respond appropriately to adults.
• The school provides highly effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), helping them overcome obstacles and achieve well.
• Leaders and staff focus on developing children’s communication and language skills, inspiring them to learn new words and speak confidently.
• The curriculum includes well-thought-out educational trips and activities that help children develop new skills and prepare for future life.

Areas to improve

• On occasion, some of the curriculum does not make clear the component knowledge that staff will teach, meaning children do not learn as much as they could. The school should ensure it considers curriculum content for each area of learning equally well.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
