South Wellfield First School is described as a “nurturing, warm and supportive” environment where pupils “flourish because they are cared for deeply.” The inspection highlights a culture of “high expectations” and respect, with pupils attending “eagerly and regularly” and demonstrating “exemplary behaviour.” The school provides a strong curriculum that prepares learners well for their future education, supported by effective leadership and staff who are ambitious for pupil success.

Strengths

• Pupils display “praiseworthy” behaviour, showing “consideration and care” for one another, with bullying being “rare.”
• The curriculum is “ambitious” and carefully sequenced, ensuring staff have the “appropriate knowledge” to teach subjects like history and reading effectively.
• Support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is “highly effective,” with “robust systems” ensuring they achieve well.
• Reading provision is strong, with “consistently and precisely taught” phonics and bespoke support for those with gaps in knowledge.
• Personal development is “exemplary,” offering a wide range of clubs and activities that enhance pupils’ talents and aspirations.

Areas to improve

• Some aspects of the wider curriculum for the youngest children are “less precise in supporting their learning,” meaning they do not always learn the important things they need to know. The school should continue to refine this curriculum.
