Spa School Camberwell

Overview

Pupils enjoy attending this special school, where a "carefully planned" environment supports their happiness and safety. The inspection highlights an "ambitious curriculum" that effectively develops communication skills and academic progress, underpinned by "exemplary" behaviour and warm staff relationships.

Strengths

• Pupils display "excellent" behaviour, with staff supporting them to regulate feelings in a "calm and consistent way".
• The curriculum is "well designed" to help pupils develop communication, interaction, and academic skills, with mathematics being "particularly well thought out".
• Reading is a clear priority, featuring a "structured programme" to help pupils decode text and access "high-quality books".
• Staff feel "valued" and appreciate manageable workloads and training, while leaders promote positive values that "permeate the school".
• Personal development is supported through trips, community visits, and a PSHE curriculum covering "tolerance and respect".

Areas to improve

• In some subjects, the curriculum is "not planned as effectively" as in others, limiting pupils' potential; leaders must ensure clear sequencing of essential content.
• Governors and trustees are "too reliant on information" from leaders and must clarify their respective responsibilities to strengthen oversight.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are "effective," with staff receiving up-to-date training and leaders keeping "meticulous records" of concerns.
