St Mellion Church of England Primary School

Overview

St Mellion Church of England Primary School continues to be a good school, where pupils are described as "vibrant and positive representatives" of their community. The school fosters a strong ethos underpinned by the ‘Parable of the Talents’ and a ‘Bring it!’ vision, creating an environment where pupils feel nurtured and well-prepared for their next educational steps.

Strengths

• Leaders provide a "rich and ambitious curriculum" that gives younger children a secure foundation in knowledge and skills.
• Teachers possess "secure subject knowledge" and receive regular training, allowing them to skilfully adapt learning for mixed-age classes.
• Reading is prioritised, with staff delivering the phonics programme "with accuracy" and providing additional support for those who struggle.
• The wider development of pupils is a strength, with effective links to the trust ensuring enriching opportunities and a secure understanding of British values.
• Governors understand their roles well and ensure leaders deliver improvement priorities with "sensitivity to staff well-being".

Areas to improve

• Leaders must embed the wider curriculum more effectively so pupils can make links across their learning to deepen understanding.
• Provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) requires more precise adaptations and greater input from parents and pupils in setting support targets.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with a strong culture where staff remain alert to potential concerns despite knowing pupils and families well.
