Overview:

Pupils enjoy attending Stapleford Abbotts Primary Academy, working hard in lessons and being proud of their work. They are motivated by rewards and celebrate each other's success. The school provides a safe and welcoming environment, with very few incidents of bullying.

Strengths:

  • Pupils really enjoy attending the school and are motivated by rewards.
  • The methods for teaching reading are highly consistent and most staff are well trained and skilled.
  • Pupils enjoy reading, particularly the books that they read as a whole class.
  • The school provides a range of extra-curricular clubs, including choir, art and football.
  • Pupils are taught about being respectful and tolerant, and are welcoming to newcomers.

Areas to improve:

  • There are a few subjects where teaching presents pupils with too much information at one time, leading to pupils not remembering the knowledge teachers intend them to.
  • Leadership of SEND has very recently changed and systems for planning for pupils with SEND are less well developed in some classes.
  • Children in the early years get lots of time to practise their early learning in adult-led activities, but the provision during children's independent activities does not always support this as well as it could.

Safeguarding:

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff are well trained on what signs to look out for if pupils are at risk, and leaders' record-keeping is detailed. Pupils feel safe, with all parents who responded to the parent survey saying that their child feels safe.

Catchment / designated area

'Priority admission area' (catchment) is an explicit oversubscription criterion before the distance tiebreaker; Essex publishes an online catchment-area finder.

What the entrance test covers

Essex has TWO different 11+ tests: 1. The CSSE exam — used by King Edward VI Grammar School (Chelmsford), Colchester Royal Grammar School, Colchester County High School for Girls, and the Southend grammar schools: English (60 minutes — comprehension, applied reasoning and a short continuous-writing element) and Mathematics (60 minutes, Key Stage 2-based), each marked out of 60. NO verbal or non-verbal reasoning; written (not purely multiple-choice) answers. One registration (csse.org.uk) and one mid-September sitting covers all CSSE schools; a combined standardised score around 303+ has historically been the consideration threshold. 2. Chelmsford County High School for Girls — NOT in the CSSE: it runs its own FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) test, registered direct with the school on a separate date. FSCE questions can draw on the whole primary curriculum to the end of Year 5, in a different style from the CSSE papers — a girl applying to CCHS plus other Essex grammars prepares for two different exam formats.
