The David Lewis Centre

Overview

The David Lewis Centre continues to be an “outstanding provider,” offering specialist further education for learners with complex needs. Leaders are “extremely ambitious” about delivering high-quality, individualised education that helps learners develop their full potential, confidence, and independence.

Strengths

• Learners describe the college as a “dream come true” and feel happy, supported, and safe.
• Staff provide “excellent therapeutic support” and use detailed assessments to remove barriers, enabling learners to make “rapid progress.”
• The curriculum is highly personalised, with tutors designing activities that meet individual targets, such as roles in the college’s juice bar.
• Learners benefit from “impartial careers advice” and work experience, helping them make informed choices about adulthood.
• Governors provide “appropriate challenge” to leaders, scrutinising curriculum aspects like work-experience placements to sustain quality.

Areas to improve

• Leaders are currently working on “growing the range of external work-placement providers” so more learners can access this aspect of the curriculum.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are “effective,” with leaders placing a high priority on keeping learners safe and making appropriate referrals to external organisations.
