Overview: The Primary School of St Mary and St Martin has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection, with pupils encouraged to develop their leadership and communication skills, and a highly positive learning environment.

Strengths:

• Pupils are encouraged to develop their leadership and communication skills throughout their time at the school.
• Behaviour around the school and in lessons is exemplary, with staff having high expectations of pupils.
• The school is ambitious for all pupils, with a clear focus on ensuring that pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) access the curriculum successfully alongside their peers.
• The school provides a range of clubs to develop pupils’ wider interests, including singing club, ‘books and biscuit’ club, drama club and sporting clubs.

Areas to improve:

• In a few subjects, the curriculum does not identify clearly what pupils will learn, resulting in teaching sometimes not securing the most important knowledge.
• The curriculum does not give pupils a sufficient understanding of different faiths and cultures, meaning that pupils do not have a depth of knowledge and understanding about different religions and are not as well prepared for life in modern Britain as they could be.

Safeguarding: The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
