The Vaynor First School

Overview

The Vaynor First School is described as a place where pupils are ‘inspired to be the best they can be’ and enjoy their learning. The report highlights a ‘calm and orderly atmosphere’ with exceptionally well-mannered pupils who feel valued and safe. While the curriculum is broad and ambitious, the inspection notes that pupils do not always fully benefit from it due to inconsistencies in checking prior knowledge.

Strengths

• Pupils behave exceptionally well, displaying high levels of cooperation, politeness, and pride in their work.
• Early years provision is outstanding, with staff expertly using dialogue and resources to deepen learning and prepare children for Key Stage 1.
• The school prioritises reading, delivering a well-structured phonics programme with consistent, high-quality support for those needing extra help.
• Staff have secure subject knowledge supported by professional development, and they swiftly identify and support pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
• Personal, social and health education prepares pupils well for life beyond school, including online safety and understanding British values.

Areas to improve

• The school must ensure checks on pupils’ learning are effective so teachers can build upon prior knowledge and support pupils to move onto new learning as soon as they are ready.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
