Thropton Village First School

Overview

Thropton Village First School is confirmed as a good school, offering a "calm, harmonious atmosphere" where pupils are happy and well-behaved. Leaders successfully manage the logistics of mixed-age classes and provide an ambitious curriculum, though some structural refinements are required to ensure consistent knowledge retention.

Strengths

• Pupils display "exemplary manners" and are "kind and thoughtful," thriving in a "warm, welcoming environment."
• Leaders "skilfully use all the resources" available, adapting teaching to ensure different year groups access appropriate content.
• Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities receive a curriculum "carefully matched to need," with content broken into small steps.
• Staff deliver "effective, high-quality phonics sessions," and children develop early phonological awareness.
• Leaders provide diverse opportunities, including trips and visits, and have invested in texts promoting "diversity, inclusion and relationships."

Areas to improve

• The curriculum in some subjects "lacks sufficient detail and structure," risking gaps in knowledge as pupils do not always revisit prior learning.
• Teacher assessments for reading are "not precise enough," leading to pupils being given books that do not match their phonic knowledge, which hinders fluent reading.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with leaders maintaining a culture of "vigilance" and ensuring there is "no air of complacency" despite few incidents.
