Torphins School

Overview

The inspection found that children are welcoming and keen to share ideas, with the nursery class demonstrating good progress through skilled staff and rich play contexts. However, the primary school received ‘weak’ evaluations for learning, teaching, assessment, and raising attainment, indicating significant challenges in meeting all children’s needs. Consequently, the school requires additional support and a further inspection within twelve months to ensure necessary improvements are made.

Strengths

• Children across the school and nursery are described as “welcoming and friendly” and are “keen to share their ideas and experiences with others.”
• In the nursery, “skilled staff offer a rich range of play contexts for learning,” resulting in children making “good progress in their learning and development.”
• The nursery class evaluations for “Learning, teaching and assessment” and “Securing children’s progress” were both rated as “good.”

Areas to improve

• Improve the overall quality of learning and teaching to better meet all children’s needs and help raise attainment in literacy and numeracy across the school.
• Ensure all learning activities are planned at the right level of difficulty to enable all children to make appropriate progress.
• Review approaches to tracking, monitoring, and assessment in the primary stages to ensure information is used effectively to evaluate learning and report progress.
