Treorchy Comprehensive School

Overview

Treorchy Comprehensive School is described as an "inclusive caring community" with a strong focus on pupil well-being and equity. However, the inspection found that "special measures are required" due to shortcomings in strategic leadership, teaching quality, attendance, and the progressive development of skills.

Strengths

• Staff demonstrate high levels of care, knowing pupils well and working effectively with outside agencies to support needs.
• Pupils benefit from a "wide-ranging curriculum" including academic and vocational options, plus valuable personal and social education.
• The provision for pupils with complex needs in Tŷ Seren is praised, where staff create an "inclusive environment" and many pupils make good progress.
• Pupils enjoy a broad range of extra-curricular activities and leadership opportunities that foster citizenship and community links.

Areas to improve

• Senior leaders must refine roles to provide clearer strategic leadership and improve the precision of self-evaluation.
• Teaching requires improvement to ensure all pupils are challenged appropriately, addressing low expectations and inconsistent feedback.
• The school must strengthen processes to improve attendance and address the "progressive development of pupils’ skills," which is currently at an early stage.

Safeguarding

The report states that pupils feel safe, bullying is dealt with "swiftly and effectively," and nearly all pupils know where to report concerns, though leaders must address specific health and safety concerns identified during the inspection.
