Westwood Boys School

Overview

Pupils are described as proud to attend the school, where they “flourish academically and personally” within a supportive environment. The report highlights “exemplary behaviour” and strong relationships between staff and pupils, noting that leaders have “high aspirations” for all students. While the overall effectiveness is rated Good, the school demonstrates particular strength in behaviour and personal development.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate “exemplary behaviour” and manage themselves “exceptionally well,” creating a “calm and respectful environment.”
• Personal development is “exemplary,” with pupils engaging in debates, learning about British values, and contributing to the local community.
• Teachers possess “strong subject knowledge” and use assessment effectively to address gaps in learning.
• Staff workload and well-being are prioritised, fostering a “strong sense of shared moral purpose and unity.”
• Leaders provide suitable careers advice, including opportunities to meet local employers and guest speakers.

Areas to improve

• In a “very small number of subjects,” curriculum thinking is less developed, meaning some pupils do not develop as deep an understanding as they should.
• Leaders do not yet pinpoint the precise reading knowledge gaps for struggling readers, preventing them from catching up with peers as quickly as they should.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are “effective,” with a strong culture where staff receive effective training and raise concerns promptly when a pupil may be at risk.
