Whitehills Nursery School

Overview

Whitehills Nursery School continues to be a good school, providing a "warm and inclusive" environment where children learn and play happily. Staff take time to understand individual needs, ensuring support is "well matched" so that children settle well and develop secure relationships. Parents are overwhelmingly positive, describing it as a "wonderful environment for all the children."

Strengths

• Children behave extremely well, confidently asking for help and learning to recognise and manage "big emotions" with adult support.
• Staff prioritise personal development and communication, using rich opportunities like books to help children, including those with SEND, develop language and express ideas.
• Children with SEND access the environment with confidence, receiving a curriculum "well matched to their needs" from staff with the right expertise.
• The curriculum helps children understand the wider world, including different cultures and festivals, preparing them well for primary school.
• Governors provide effective support, visiting regularly and challenging leaders when necessary, while staff workload and well-being are considered.

Areas to improve

• The curriculum lacks precision in detailing key knowledge and early language, risking gaps in some children’s development.
• The school must refine the curriculum to ensure the vocabulary and concepts children should know and recall are "detailed and precise."

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
