Whitley Chapel Church of England First School

Overview

This is a “welcoming village school” where pupils are “proud to be part of this school community” and demonstrate “kind and considerate” behaviour. The report highlights a “broad and ambitious” curriculum that supports strong progress in reading, mathematics, and computing, alongside high attendance and a culture of inclusion.

Strengths

• Pupils are “keen readers” who benefit from consistent phonics teaching and read widely, with older pupils discussing books enthusiastically.
• The curriculum is “broad and ambitious” with “effective sequencing of lessons” that helps pupils build knowledge over time, particularly in computing and mathematics.
• Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are “well supported” through timely professional advice and adaptations that help them access the full curriculum.
• Staff are “very proud to work here” and receive “timely training opportunities,” while governors “understand the important aspects of their role.”
• Older pupils act as “strong role models,” supporting younger peers during lunchtimes and contributing to a calm, respectful environment.

Areas to improve

• Learning activities in mixed-age classes do not always provide sufficient opportunity for older pupils to “deepen their learning” or connect knowledge as successfully as they could.
• Governors’ monitoring of school performance is “developing,” and they lack a “precise understanding of the school’s progress,” limiting their ability to hold leaders to account effectively.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
