Winterbourne Nursery and Infants' School

Overview

This is a "welcoming school community" where staff build "warm and trusting professional relationships" with pupils. Leaders have implemented significant changes to improve the curriculum and reading programme, ensuring pupils are "well prepared for their next steps in education" upon leaving after Year 2.

Strengths

• The school provides a "calm and orderly environment" where pupils learn routines and behave well, supported by initiatives like the ‘buddy bench’.
• Pupils are encouraged to be "proud of their cultural heritage" and to respect others, fostering strong personal development.
• Staff work hard to help pupils catch up on missed learning, with "daily phonics lessons" following a clear structure to support reading attainment.
• The school identifies pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) early, providing adapted strategies so they can "access the same curriculum as their peers".
• Leaders have created a "strong sense of teamwork," with staff feeling "well supported and valued" through strategies to reduce workload.

Areas to improve

• In some foundation subjects, "curriculum thinking is not as well developed," meaning essential subject knowledge is not clearly identified or sequenced, leading to gaps in pupils’ cumulative knowledge.
• Leaders must ensure that support staff who have taken on additional teaching responsibilities receive "personalised and tailored support" to fulfil their roles effectively.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
