Wyvern Academy

Overview

Wyvern Academy has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection. The school employs a ‘child-centred, family-focused’ approach, providing high-quality pastoral support and a bespoke curriculum tailored to pupils with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. Pupils flourish due to nurturing relationships and expert staff support, demonstrating impressive behaviour and positive attitudes towards their education.

Strengths

• The curriculum is well designed and sequenced, with staff carefully considering education, health and care plans to meet individual learning, medical, and emotional needs.
• Pupils benefit from a strong focus on communication, early reading, writing, and mathematics, alongside opportunities to develop independence through movement and core strength activities.
• Wider development is well considered, with pupils enjoying music, sports, and community trips that build confidence, social skills, and resilience.
• Leaders and trustees demonstrate a detailed understanding of the school’s impact, holding the school firmly to account while supporting staff workload and well-being.

Areas to improve

• The trust should ensure all staff know how to use assessment effectively for pupils in the early stages of learning, as varying understanding of engagement areas means some teaching does not precisely meet pupils’ needs, hindering progress.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
