YGG Blaendulais

Overview

Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Blaendulais is described as a “happy, homely and caring school” where pupils take pride in their community and Welsh culture. Most pupils make “sound progress” and demonstrate mature, respectful behaviour, supported by strong staff relationships and a focus on well-being.

Strengths

• Pupils use “polished spoken language and natural dialect successfully” due to a strong emphasis on oral skills.
• Teachers effectively use the local area to enrich “outdoor learning experiences” and develop awareness of pupils’ ‘cynefin’.
• There is a “very strong team ethos” and productive working relationships with families and the community.
• Leaders and staff are committed to providing the “best possible start” for pupils, with energetic support from governors.

Areas to improve

• Provide regular opportunities for pupils to apply numeracy skills across the curriculum, as this is not currently done enough.
• Reduce “over-direction by teachers” to better develop pupils’ independent learning and thinking skills.
• Strengthen self-evaluation processes, which are not always “robust enough” to clearly identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Safeguarding

The report states that pupils are “very aware of how to take care of their well-being,” reflecting the school’s positive impact on their welfare.
