Ysgol Y Rhos

Overview

Ysgol Y Rhos is described as a "caring and nurturing community" where staff build positive relationships, helping many pupils make "sound progress in their social skills and confidence." However, the school "does not meet the regulatory requirements" for registration under the Independent School Standards (Wales) Regulations 2003, with limited progress made against previous recommendations.

Strengths

• Staff create a supportive environment where pupils develop "strong working relationships" and feel confident sharing concerns.
• Pupils make "suitable progress" in physical skills through enthusiastic participation in outdoor activities like canoeing and sports.
• Many pupils develop "worthwhile creative skills," producing imaginative art and engaging in fundraising activities.
• Teachers are often "flexible to the emerging emotional needs" of pupils, adapting lessons effectively.

Areas to improve

• The school must "comply fully with the Independent School Standards (Wales) Regulations 2003," particularly regarding curriculum breadth and assessment frameworks.
• Procedures for tracking pupil progress, attendance, and behaviour are "significantly underdeveloped," preventing a clear picture of individual development.
• Provision for personal, social, health, relationships and sex education, and careers is "limited" and lacks a cohesive approach.

Safeguarding

The report states the school "does not meet the regulatory requirements" for welfare, health and safety, specifically noting the absence of a written policy for activities outside school and failures to keep written records of sanctions for serious disciplinary offences.
