Foyle College

Overview

Foyle College is described as a high-achieving, inclusive voluntary grammar school with a clear vision underpinned by its “Foyle Family” ethos. The inspection finds that the school is “realising well” its vision through strong leadership, effective teaching, and a supportive community, with pupil attainment improving steadily.

Strengths

• “Planning, teaching and assessment are key strengths,” with teachers demonstrating “secure subject expertise” and designing “well-paced, challenging activities.”
• A “strong ethos of belonging and inclusion” is evident, with staff providing “well-targeted individualised support” for pupils with special educational needs.
• “Pastoral care remains a core strength,” characterised by positive relationships where staff “know their pupils well.”
• Success is “securely embedded” through data-informed improvement, resulting in rising attainment and a narrowed gender gap at GCSE.
• The school fosters a “cohesive community of learning” through effective staff professional development and active pupil voice mechanisms.

Areas to improve

• The report identifies one area for action: to “continue to build upon the school's internal and external consultation processes and strengthen communication at all levels across the school community.”
• A minority of departmental schemes remain “over-reliant on examination-board materials,” though staff are working to ensure consistency.

Safeguarding

The evidence demonstrates that “arrangements for child and adult protection align to the current statutory guidance.”
