ABERNANT COUNTY PRIMARY

Overview

Abernant Primary School is described as a "happy and caring community" where pupils feel "safe and valued" and demonstrate positive attitudes to learning. However, the report judges standards, wellbeing, teaching, and leadership as "Adequate and needs improvement," noting that more able pupils do not always achieve as well as they could and that strategic direction for improvement lacks clarity.

Strengths

• Pupils make "good progress in reading" and develop "effective speaking and listening skills."
• Provision in nursery and reception supports "good progress in developing their early literacy and numeracy skills."
• Most pupils receiving additional support make "good progress" against individual targets.
• Staff work together purposefully, creating "calm and respectful learning environments."
• The school creates an "inclusive environment" with robust systems for tracking progress and supporting vulnerable pupils.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must implement strategies effectively to improve the "quality of teaching and learning" and provide clearer strategic direction.
• Teaching must ensure all pupils receive the "right level of challenge" and develop as "independent learners."
• The school needs to improve pupils’ Welsh language skills, numeracy provision, and attendance rates.

Safeguarding

The report states that "arrangements for safeguarding pupils meet requirements and give no cause for concern," though it notes a health and safety issue was raised during the inspection.
