Ash Lea Academy

Overview

Ash Lea School has “taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection.” It is described as a “warm and welcoming school” where pupils feel safe and staff demonstrate a “thorough understanding of pupils’ unique and complex needs.” The report confirms that the school continues to provide high-quality education and care for its pupils.

Strengths

• Staff “skilfully help pupils to regulate their own behaviour and manage their emotions,” responding “quickly and sensitively” to distress.
• The curriculum is “personalised” for each pupil, blending learning with “therapeutic needs” to maximise engagement and support.
• Pupils benefit from “rich experiences beyond the classroom,” including residential trips and enterprise activities, which build independence and resilience.
• Leaders ensure staff feel “valued and well supported,” with decisions made in the “best interests of the pupils.”
• Effective transition programmes ensure pupils move on to placements “well matched to their individual needs and aspirations.”

Areas to improve

• In a small number of subjects, teachers’ use of assessment is “sometimes not precise enough,” meaning misconceptions are not identified swiftly.
• The school needs to embed an assessment approach that “routinely informs teaching across the curriculum” to ensure learning develops securely.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
