Overview

Aurora Foxes is an independent specialist college for students aged 16 to 25 with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The report describes an environment where students "thrive" and exhibit "exemplary behaviours," resulting in an overall effectiveness judgement of Good.

Strengths

• Students demonstrate "professional behaviours and excellent customer service skills" through work experience in the college’s hotel.
• Staff use effective communication strategies, such as sign and symbols, ensuring "inclusive teaching and support" for all learners.
• Students develop independence, with many able to "travel independently, manage their own budgets and are able to make informed decisions about their lives."
• The personal development curriculum helps students prepare for adulthood, including managing finances and shopping with "decreasing levels of support."
• Therapy staff collaborate well with teachers to help students "recognise and regulate their own emotions," building resilience.

Areas to improve

• Ensure the curriculum is "ambitious enough for all students," as too many study qualifications at a lower level than they are capable of.
• Improve teachers’ expertise and training in specific subjects, such as English and mathematics, to build knowledge and fluency effectively.
• Ensure curriculum content and planning are better informed by students’ EHC plans and individual progress to focus teaching on specific needs.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff well trained in reporting concerns and students regularly taught about safety matters, including online safety.
