Balham Nursery School

Overview

Children “flourish” at this nursery school, feeling “safe, happy, and well cared for” within a strong community. The school delivers an “ambitious curriculum” with “exemplary” behaviour and outstanding personal development, though inconsistencies in teaching precision and curriculum sequencing limit progress for some pupils.

Strengths

• Children demonstrate “exemplary” behaviour, being “kind, considerate and respectful” with rare instances of challenging conduct.
• Personal development is “particularly effective,” fostering “respect and empathy” and building confidence through responsibilities.
• Staff support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) effectively, working closely with families to ensure full curriculum access.
• Enriching opportunities, such as nature walks and library visits, “broaden children’s horizons” and foster curiosity.
• Leaders and governors are “proactive in identifying areas for development” and provide effective support and challenge.

Areas to improve

• Strengthen staff expertise to ensure teaching consistently supports children’s “communication, language, and early mathematical development.”
• Ensure all curriculum areas are “carefully sequenced” so activities and questions clearly adapt for different ages and build precisely on prior knowledge.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
