Overview

Pupils regard the school as a “safe and happy place” where they enjoy learning and maintain positive attitudes. The curriculum is ambitious and well-structured, particularly in supporting pupils for whom English is an additional language. However, the school fails to meet independent school standards because it does not teach all protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.

Strengths

• The curriculum is “ambitious” and broken down into “well-ordered steps” that allow pupils to build knowledge securely.
• Staff effectively support pupils with English as an additional language and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
• Reading is placed “at the heart of the curriculum,” with strong phonics teaching and encouragement for wide reading.
• Pupils demonstrate good behaviour, showing “courtesy to staff, to visitors and to each other” in a “calm and orderly” environment.
• Leaders show due regard for staff workload and well-being, and safeguarding arrangements are effective.

Areas to improve

• The school must ensure the intended curriculum is taught consistently well in all subjects, as checks are currently lacking in a small number of areas.
• The proprietor must ensure pupils learn about the full range of protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010 to prepare them for life in British society.
