Birches First School

Overview

This is a good school where pupils enjoy learning and demonstrate high academic standards. Leaders have fostered a positive culture characterised by kindness, respect, and strong partnerships with parents. The curriculum is broad and ambitious, with particular strength in reading and mathematics.

Strengths

• Pupils exhibit "good behaviour" and are "kind to one another," with bullying "not accepted."
• Reading and mathematics are "organised and taught well," supported by consistent phonics training and a "healthy reading culture."
• The early years provision offers a "super start to school" through "purposeful play" and "warm encouragement."
• Leaders have "sequenced learning carefully" in subjects like geography and history, helping pupils retain knowledge long-term.
• Staff support pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) effectively, ensuring they "access the same learning as their peers and achieve."

Areas to improve

• Assessment in foundation subjects is "not as informed as it could be"; the school should develop routines to make this "manageable, efficient" and helpful for embedding learning.
• The "quality of handwriting, however, is mixed"; the school must ensure pupils are taught "good writing habits from the start" with consistent practice.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
