Broadmead Lower School

Overview

Broadmead Lower School is described as a "positive and welcoming place" where pupils enjoy "warm, nurturing relationships" with staff. The report highlights a "calm and respectful atmosphere" with high expectations for behaviour and a curriculum designed to build knowledge over time.

Strengths

• Pupils feel safe and know staff will act quickly if bullying occurs.
• The early years curriculum is "very detailed" and allows children to make "strong progress from their starting points."
• Teachers use subject knowledge to address misconceptions and adapt teaching for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
• The school prioritises reading, aiming for all pupils to be "fluent readers" by the end of Year 4.
• Pupils’ personal development is well promoted, including learning about diverse faiths.

Areas to improve

• Teachers do not always use assessment information well enough to move pupils on quickly when they are ready, as they lack training on next steps.
• Governors do not actively request sufficient detail on behaviour and attendance, limiting their ability to "check and challenge" the school effectively.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff being "vigilant" and using clear systems to identify at-risk pupils and record concerns.
