Canvey Island Infant School and Nursery

Overview

Canvey Island Infant School and Nursery has “taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection.” The report describes a “welcoming and friendly school” where pupils are “happy, polite and enjoy their learning.” Leaders and governors are effective, ensuring high expectations and robust support for all pupils.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate “positive attitudes to their education” and model values of “respect, responsibility and resilience.”
• A “consistently delivered, high-quality phonics programme” allows early readers to “catch up quickly” after previous below-national outcomes.
• The early years provide an “exciting and engaging learning environment” with “high-quality adult interactions.”
• Teachers have “secure” subject knowledge and use effective systems to support pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
• Attendance is a priority, with “robust systems in place to track absences” resulting in regular pupil attendance.

Areas to improve

• Some pupils are not fluent readers; the school must develop staff expertise to support “accuracy and fluency” so pupils become “more confident readers.”
• Some pupils do not retain key vocabulary across all subjects; staff should routinely check understanding to prevent “gaps in what they know and remember.”

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
