Coppice School

Overview

Coppice School continues to be a good school, providing a highly effective environment for pupils with severe learning difficulties and autism. The report highlights that the school ensures pupils feel safe, happy, and well-supported through tailored curricula and a nature-inspired setting that promotes calm and concentration.

Strengths

• The curriculum is "well organised" and meets individual needs through colour-coded pathways, with "high expectations for achievement."
• Communication is central to learning, with staff effectively using signs, symbols, and phonics to help pupils express themselves and engage with stories.
• There is a strong focus on preparing pupils for life after school, including developing independence, life skills, and increasing transitions to employment or college.
• Pupils behave well and are polite, supported by staff who foster positive relationships, self-confidence, and coping strategies.
• Personal development is strong, with opportunities for community visits, social events, and an active pupil parliament guiding school issues.

Areas to improve

• The school must refine the "granular steps" within subject areas and pathways, as they are not always "clearly identified," making it difficult to assess precisely how much pupils know and can do.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
