Curnow School

Overview

Curnow School has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection. The report describes the school as a "very special place" that provides an "exceptional, nurturing environment" for pupils with complex needs. Parents speak highly of the provision, and pupils are described as happy, secure, and well-supported by staff who know them intimately.

Strengths

• The curriculum is "carefully tailored to meet the needs of pupils," with specific pathways designed to support long-term achievement and preparation for later life.
• Staff skilfully provide high-quality care and respect, fostering positive relationships where pupils feel supported by "trusted adults."
• Personal development is prioritised, with staff expertly helping pupils understand concepts such as "consent" and gender equality.
• The school maintains a "family atmosphere," with strong communication between staff and parents that quickly resolves worries.
• Leaders and the trust provide thorough oversight and enhanced specialist support to meet pupils' health, education, and care needs.

Areas to improve

• Assessment systems have not been updated to align with the improved curriculum, causing staff to spend excessive time on "unnecessary assessments."
• This misalignment reduces the time pupils have to "practise key skills" and embed new learning, requiring the trust to ensure assessment is effective.
