Downs View Infant School

Overview

Downs View Infant School is judged ‘Good’ overall, with ‘Outstanding’ ratings for behaviour, personal development, and early years provision. The report describes a school where pupils are immersed in learning within a “calm and purposeful” environment, supported by staff who create opportunities to “fire pupils’ imagination.” Leaders have ambitious aims that are largely fulfilled, particularly in early years, where children receive a “strongest possible start.”

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate “highly respectful” behaviour and “relentlessly positive attitudes,” contributing to an excellent climate for learning.
• Early years provision is ‘Outstanding’, with staff using clear routines and resources like “treasure chests” to engage children.
• The school enables all pupils to learn to read fluently, with “skilful input from staff” extending vocabulary and supporting weaker readers.
• Personal development is ‘Outstanding’, with a detailed programme enhancing social skills, emotional understanding, and cultural horizons.
• Disadvantaged pupils achieve more highly than published data suggests, benefiting from effective support and high attendance priorities.

Areas to improve

• In some curriculum areas, work provided is not fully aligned with ambitious aims, meaning pupils do not develop knowledge to “consistently high standards.”
• Leaders should ensure that tasks set by teachers are consistently aligned with the “exceptional aspirations that the curriculum entails.”

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
