Evergreen

Overview

Evergreen is an independent residential special school for pupils aged seven to 16 with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The report describes a setting where pupils enjoy "strong, nurturing relationships" with staff and benefit from a "thoughtfully designed curriculum" that prepares them for future education and adult life.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate "excellent" progress in recognising and managing their own behaviour, supported by clear routines that provide "structure and predictability".
• Staff are "calm and empathetic" when supporting pupils, effectively challenging low-level behaviour and helping learners feel "safe and ready to learn".
• The school offers a "varied range of visits and experiences," including dance, instrumental lessons, and outdoor education, which helps identify pupils’ interests and aspirations.
• Early reading is well-supported through "regular phonics sessions" and routine checks, with books matched to pupils’ knowledge to build fluency.
• Personal development provision ensures pupils learn about life in modern Britain, with stereotypes challenged to provide an "informed, impartial view" of their community.

Areas to improve

• In a small number of subjects, "important curriculum vocabulary" and language structures are not clearly identified, making it difficult for pupils with speech and language needs to secure new knowledge or make connections between concepts.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
