Expanse Learning (Expanse Group Ltd)

Overview

The report describes a specialist college where leaders have established a culture in which learners feel "welcomed and supported." While staff sensitively support wellbeing and personal development, the report states that leaders "do not place the same priority on supporting learners to achieve their academic targets." Consequently, several key areas are judged as needing attention, particularly regarding curriculum planning and teaching quality.

Strengths

• Learners benefit from an "extensive programme of enrichment activities," including work placements and cultural experiences.
• Staff work closely with parents and professionals to ensure learners can "advocate for themselves."
• Leaders place "high priority on staff wellbeing," providing private healthcare and non-teaching days.
• Governors are "experienced and experts" who challenge leaders rigorously.
• Learners are "well prepared for their adult lives" and understand fundamental British values.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must "accurately identify learners’ starting points" to develop ambitious, personalised curriculums.
• Teaching is not "tailored well enough" for all learners, with insufficient use of visual aids or scaffolding.
• Leaders should improve oversight to "accurately identify weaknesses" and resolve them swiftly.

Safeguarding

The safeguarding standards are met, with an "open culture in which safeguarding is everyone's responsibility" ensuring learners are made safer and feel safe.
