Overview

This report details a Sustaining Improvement Inspection conducted in June 2017, which was significantly impacted by industrial action involving non-cooperation from staff. Consequently, the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) was unable to evaluate the quality of learning, teaching, or the school’s capacity for self-evaluation. The report concludes that the ETI could not assure stakeholders of the quality of education or safeguarding provided at the time of the inspection.

Strengths

• The previous inspection in June 2014 evaluated the overall effectiveness of the school as “good”.
• During a follow-up visit in September 2017, the school provided evidence that safeguarding arrangements “reflect broadly the guidance issued by the Department of Education”.
• Pupils reported that they “feel safe in school” and know “what to do and who to talk to if they are concerned about their safety or well-being”.

Areas to improve

• The school needs to “continue to improve risk assessments for educational visits and outings”.
• The ETI was unable to evaluate the “outworking of the arrangements for safeguarding” due to ongoing industrial action.
• The school is designated as a “high priority for future inspection with no further notice”.

Safeguarding

While the initial inspection found no evidence of satisfactory arrangements, a follow-up visit confirmed that policies broadly reflect Departmental guidance, though the ETI could not fully evaluate their implementation due to staff non-cooperation.
