Hayesdown First School

Overview

Hayesdown First School continues to be a good school, providing an environment where pupils feel safe and learning is enjoyable. The report highlights a clear vision for achievement, with an ambitious curriculum that is well sequenced and effectively implemented in key areas such as reading, mathematics, and physical education.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate "exemplary attitudes towards school," showing high levels of respect, courtesy, and sustained concentration.
• Reading is "at the heart of the school’s curriculum," with children building fluency and confidence through a structured approach using the school’s ‘reading spine’.
• The mathematics curriculum is "well-structured," with teachers effectively using the ‘I do, we do, you do’ approach to model concepts and check understanding.
• Attendance levels are "excellent," supported by effective systems and collaborative work with parents and external agencies when needed.
• Pupils develop a "mature understanding of protected characteristics and fundamental British values," feeling well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Areas to improve

• In some subjects, staff do not "routinely adapt learning well enough to fully support pupils and their individual needs," meaning some pupils, including those with SEND, do not progress as well as their peers.
• The trust needs to ensure teachers continue to develop their expertise to ensure all pupils progress through the curriculum effectively.
