Vallis First School

Overview

Vallis First School is described as a "rapidly improving school" that has achieved a position of "stability and rapid improvement." The inspection highlights a "warm and welcoming community" where pupils feel valued, safe, and well-supported by staff who maintain high expectations for behaviour and achievement.

Strengths

• The curriculum has been reviewed and updated to clarify knowledge, with a "sharp focus on developing vocabulary and language" resulting in strong communication skills.
• Staff deliver the reading curriculum with expertise, ensuring pupils become "confident and fluent readers" through effective support from Reception.
• Significant improvements have been made to mathematics, particularly in building "times table fluency" following previous lower outcomes.
• The school has improved the early identification of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), providing timely support so they can access the curriculum alongside peers.
• Pupils demonstrate positive behaviour, moving around the school in a "calm and orderly manner" and engaging enthusiastically in lessons and leadership roles.

Areas to improve

• In some foundation subjects, older pupils have "gaps in their knowledge," making it difficult to build new knowledge securely; staff must use effective strategies to identify and address these gaps.
• In some foundation subjects, tasks do not match well enough to the intended learning; the school should "refine task design" to focus sharply on the most important content.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
