Hockliffe Lower School

Overview

Hockliffe Lower School is a small village primary where pupils enjoy attending and feel well cared for through strong pastoral support. The inspection found that the school provides a good quality of education, with high expectations for behaviour and a well-sequenced curriculum that helps pupils build knowledge. Staff know pupils well, fostering a safe environment where children engage positively in their learning.

Strengths

• The curriculum is "well-sequenced" and clearly sets out what pupils need to know, particularly in reading and mathematics.
• Teachers possess "expert subject knowledge" and typically present new information "clearly and precisely".
• Phonics teaching is "highly effective," resulting in pupils becoming "fluent and enthusiastic readers".
• The school "quickly and accurately identifies the needs of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)" and provides tailored support.
• Pupils demonstrate good behaviour and high attendance, supported by a "recently introduced behaviour curriculum".

Areas to improve

• The school must develop monitoring processes to evaluate how well recently introduced subjects are delivered, as pupils do not always make the best progress.
• Staff should develop expertise to teach mixed-aged classes more precisely, ensuring teaching meets pupils' starting points so they learn and remember information securely.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
