John Paul II Primary School

Overview

This sustaining improvement inspection was conducted during industrial action involving 'action short of strike', where teachers did not co-operate with inspectors. Consequently, the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) was unable to evaluate the quality of learning and teaching or the school’s capacity for self-evaluation. The report concludes that the ETI is 'unable to assure parents/carers... of the quality of education being provided for the children'.

Strengths

• Children spoke positively of the 'care and support provided by the staff' and the 'friendly ethos of the school'.
• Pupils reported their 'enjoyment of learning' and stated they 'feel safe in school'.
• Children demonstrated awareness of 'what to do if they have any concerns about their safety or well-being'.
• The school provided evidence that safeguarding arrangements 'reflect broadly the guidance from the Department of Education'.

Areas to improve

• The report states the ETI was 'unable to evaluate' the area for improvement from the 2015 inspection, which was to 'embed the developing culture of self-evaluation, to improve the consistency of the children’s learning experiences and raise the standards they attain'.
• The school is designated as a 'high priority for future inspection with no further notice' due to the inability to assure quality.

Safeguarding

The report notes that while arrangements 'reflect broadly the guidance from the Department of Education' and children feel safe, the ETI was 'unable to evaluate fully the outworking of the arrangements for safeguarding in the school' owing to the industrial action.
