Laghey Primary School

Overview

This inspection was conducted during industrial action, meaning teachers did not cooperate with inspectors. Consequently, the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) was “unable to assure parents/carers... of the quality of education being provided.” The report states that overall effectiveness, outcomes for learners, quality of provision, and leadership could not be evaluated.

Strengths

• Year 6 and 7 children spoke “enthusiastically about their enjoyment of learning across the curriculum,” including shared education experiences.
• Pupils have opportunities to take on roles of responsibility on the School Council and contribute to “decision-making about matters that affect them.”
• Children participate in a range of after-school activities to develop skills in sport and drama, including performing as a school choir.
• Year 6 children highlighted a “welcoming and supportive ethos” and reported that they “feel safe.”

Areas to improve

• The school needs to “implement the planned review of pastoral and safeguarding policies and procedures in line with current DE Guidance.”
• The employing authority, governors, and staff must “plan for, and manage, issues related to the sustainability of the school provision and school budget.”

Safeguarding

The report states that safeguarding arrangements “reflect broadly the guidance from the Department of Education,” but the ETI was “unable to evaluate fully the outworking of the arrangements” due to the industrial action.
