Longshaw Nursery School

Overview

Longshaw Nursery School continues to be a good school, providing a welcoming environment where children settle quickly and are happy. The school is ambitious for all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), with a strong focus on building confidence and self-esteem.

Strengths

• The curriculum is "broad and balanced," "aspirational and well designed to meet the needs and interests of children."
• Staff are "well trained" and use assessment information effectively to identify gaps in knowledge and build on what children already know.
• Children with SEND benefit from "effective systems" for identification and assessment, ensuring they access the same curriculum as their classmates.
• Communication and language skills are developed through activities like songs, nursery rhymes, and exploring new words.
• The governing body has a "secure understanding of the quality of education" and offers "effective support and challenge."

Areas to improve

• In a "small number of activities," staff are not clear about the important knowledge to teach, meaning children do not deepen their knowledge as well as they could. The school should ensure staff design activities that help children build on existing knowledge.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
