Maghera Primary School

Overview

This sustaining improvement inspection was significantly constrained by industrial action, as teaching staff refused to cooperate with inspectors. Consequently, the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) was unable to evaluate the quality of learning and teaching or assure stakeholders of the education provided. The school is designated as a high priority for future inspection with no further notice.

Strengths

• Year 6 pupils reported having "very good opportunities to develop their leadership capabilities" through roles such as ‘digital leaders’ and participation in School and Eco-Councils.
• Children stated they "enjoy participating in the wide range of extra-curricular activities afforded to them."
• Pupils reported that they "feel safe in school" and know who to approach regarding safety or well-being concerns.
• Children indicated they know "how to stay safe online in school and at home."

Areas to improve

• The employing authority, governors, and staff must plan for and manage issues related to the "sustainability of the school provision and school budget" to address current and future needs.
• Access points to the school grounds require "immediate attention to ensure the safety of the children," despite existing risk assessments.

Safeguarding

The report states that safeguarding arrangements "reflect broadly the guidance from the Department of Education," but the ETI was unable to fully evaluate their outworking due to the industrial action.
