Mayfield School

Overview

Mayfield School continues to be a good school, providing a calm and welcoming environment where pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities thrive. The report highlights that pupils build independence, resilience, and confidence through carefully considered curriculum opportunities and positive relationships rooted in respect.

Strengths

• Pupils are well prepared for adulthood, benefiting from a well-developed careers programme and strong relationships with work experience partners.
• The ambitious curriculum design helps pupils make connections between subjects, such as using mathematical knowledge in woodwork.
• Staff effectively use education, health and care plans to identify barriers to learning and support individual progress.
• Phonics teaching is purposefully adapted, with staff’s improved knowledge helping pupils secure phonics skills at an earlier stage.
• The school fosters a sense of belonging, with families enjoying events together and feeling part of the ‘Mayfield family’.

Areas to improve

• In some wider curriculum areas, pupils lack secure knowledge of essential concepts, preventing them from connecting and applying their learning effectively.
• The school needs to identify the essential knowledge it wants pupils to know, remember, and apply in these specific subjects.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
