Romans Field School

Overview

Romans Field School continues to be a good school where pupils feel they belong and ‘have a place’. The report highlights an inclusive ethos with ‘genuine care’ from staff, who provide consistently caring and empathetic support to help pupils regulate their emotions and behaviour. Expectations for achievement are high, supported by a holistic curriculum tailored to individual needs.

Strengths

• Pupils receive ‘consistently caring and empathetic support’ and learn personal strategies to manage their behaviour.
• The curriculum is ‘thoughtfully planned’ with subject knowledge broken into manageable chunks and carefully sequenced.
• There is a ‘sharp focus on communication’, including effective phonics programmes and symbol reading for non-verbal pupils.
• The PSHE curriculum is ‘well sequenced’, preparing pupils for life in modern Britain through real-life scenarios and trips.
• Staff benefit from a culture of ‘mutual support’ and purposeful training delivered alongside therapists.

Areas to improve

• Ensure all staff consistently use agreed approaches to implement new curriculum plans, as some lack the precise knowledge needed for consistent high achievement.
• Implement more opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles across the school, beyond the existing school council.
