Sheiling College

Overview

Sheiling College continues to be a "good provider" for young people with autism and complex learning disabilities. The inspection found that learners enjoy studying at the college, feel safe, and receive individualised programmes that effectively prepare them for adulthood and positive destinations.

Strengths

• Learners benefit from "good-quality teaching" where staff use their interests to make lessons engaging and celebrate achievements with weekly certificates.
• Leaders ensure learners receive "helpful impartial career education," resulting in most securing "purposeful and fulfilling activities" after leaving college.
• Trustees "support and challenge leaders well," using their expertise to monitor teaching quality and maintain a strong understanding of the curriculum.
• Most learners make "good progress from their starting points" and achieve their qualifications, with almost all progressing to positive destinations.
• Effective work experience opportunities, such as working at a local railway station or on farms, help learners develop practical skills and independence.

Areas to improve

• Improve curriculum planning so that the most able learners can study above entry level and are better prepared for transition to further education.
• Improve the planning of teaching and learning to provide more opportunities for learners to work collectively, thereby developing social skills and increasing independence.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
