St Bega's CofE Primary School

Overview

The report describes the school as a ‘calm and happy place’ with an ‘inclusive, supportive atmosphere’ where pupils behave well and value positive relationships with staff. However, the quality of education, leadership, and early years provision are judged as requiring improvement because the new curriculum is not yet embedded and assessment practices are inconsistent.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate high levels of respect and work hard, contributing to a culture described as ‘a family’.
• Personal development is strong, with pupils well prepared for life beyond school through broad experiences and an understanding of fundamental British values.
• The school accurately identifies the needs of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and provides personalised support.
• Governors have taken effective action to improve their oversight, including accessing training.

Areas to improve

• The school must support staff with curriculum implementation to ensure activities are consistently matched to pupils’ next steps and intended learning.
• Swift, targeted support is needed to close gaps in pupils’ phonics knowledge and help them become confident readers.
• Assessment processes must be used more effectively to check long-term retention of knowledge and inform subsequent teaching planning.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
